Harmeet Dhillon is an Indian-American lawyer with Punjabi family heritage who publicly identifies with the Sikh faith. She was born in Chandigarh, India, and moved abroad with her family as a child. Her background includes an upbringing in North Carolina and a legal career in the United States.

Questions about Harmeet Dhillon’s ethnicity often combine three different subjects: ancestry, nationality, and religion. Punjabi describes her family’s regional and cultural heritage; Indian-American describes her Indian origins and American life; Sikh identifies her faith.

What Is Harmeet Dhillon’s Ethnic Background?

The Indian Express describes Dhillon as coming from a Punjabi Sikh family. This is documented biographical reporting, rather than a conclusion drawn from her surname or appearance.

Her family’s connection to India remained part of her childhood after emigrating. Reports describe regular visits to relatives and an emphasis on maintaining cultural and religious ties.

These details support a description of her heritage, but they should not be used to assume that every Punjabi person shares her religion, political views, or personal experiences.

Where Was She Born and Raised?

Dhillon’s Department of Justice biography identifies Chandigarh as her birthplace. It traces the family’s move through London and the Bronx before they settled in Smithfield, North Carolina.

Her father worked as a physician. A Voice of America profile connects the family’s early moves to his medical training and work as an orthopedic surgeon.

That route matters when describing her background: being born in India does not mean that she spent her entire childhood there. Much of her education and later professional life developed in the United States.

How Has She Described Her Sikh Upbringing?

Dhillon has discussed the experience of growing up in a community with few Sikh families. KQED’s reporting, drawing on an earlier interview with her, recounts how her family’s names, clothing, and turbans made them stand out.

Voice of America also reported that her mother took her and her brother to India during the summer to learn about Sikhism and maintain relationships with their grandparents.

A 2026 profile in The Assembly describes the family’s involvement in establishing a Sikh temple in Durham. Together, these accounts show a religious identity maintained through family life and community institutions.

Education and Legal Career

Her DOJ biography records a degree in classical studies from Dartmouth College, followed by legal studies at the University of Virginia. She served on the Virginia Law Review’s editorial board and later clerked for federal appeals judge Paul V. Niemeyer.

She went on to establish Dhillon Law Group and the Center for American Liberty. Her professional work included free-speech, civil-rights, and election-law matters.

The Senate’s official roll call records her confirmation as an assistant attorney general on April 3, 2025, by 52 votes to 45. She subsequently led the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.

Latest Update: Her November 2026 Resignation

Reuters reported on November 5, 2026 that Dhillon resigned from that role, with her departure announced by Attorney General Todd Blanche. The report said she planned to return to her law firm.

That update changes how her current job should be described, even where older biographies still list her as serving at DOJ. It does not alter the documented account of her Punjabi heritage, Indian birthplace, and publicly expressed Sikh faith.
